Audition Notice for Richard III, by William Shakespeare, to be performed in the open air at Reading Abbey Ruins.

1 March - Audition for all other roles- 2.30pm- Progress Theatre

11 March - Audition for all other roles- 7.30pm- Progress Theatre

15-25 July – Performance Dates- Reading Abbey Ruins

Notes on the Audition

If you are planning to audition for Richard please attend the March 5th Audition. After this audition we will be asking shortlisted Richard actors to attend either of the general auditions. Actors who want to audition for Richard and other parts will need to attend the 5th and another date.

Due to the nature of the play we will be auditioning certain roles only- this is to ensure an easier audition process. Smaller parts will not have specific audition pieces. At the audition you may be asked to read a role which you are not auditioning for.  

Please note the following

Auditions at Progress Theatre  are open to all, and we fully support colour-blind casting. With the exceptions of narrative restrictions we are also carrying out gender-blind casting for this production. All those cast are required to join Progress Theatre if they are not already a member.

The roles which have audition pieces are as follows-

Richard the Third- Male- any age 25+ (Maximum 60)

Anne Neville- female- 25-45

George (Duke of Clarence)- Male- 35+ 

Buckingham- Male or Female- Age 25+

Queen Elizabeth- Female- 30+

Duchess of York- Female- 50+

Tyrrel- Male/Female- 30+

Other roles which will NOT have specific audition pieces

Edward- Male – 40+

Rivers- Male – 20+

Catesby- Male/Female- any age

Ratcliff- Male/female- any age

Henry Tudor- Male- 35+

Stanley- Male- 45+

Hastings- Male/Female- any age

Norfolk- Male/Female- any age

Lord Mayor of London- Male/Female- any age

Guard/Messenger/Capt Blunt- Male/Female- any age

If you wish to audition for any role but cannot make the audition dates please email the director at to arrange an alternative date. Please note that opportunities to audition will end at the closing of the second audition on 11 March.

Rehearsal process- the provisional rehearsal schedule will be available at the audition. If you re unable to rehearse on particular dates please indicate on your audition form. We will normally hold three rehearsals per week. 

Performing in the Ruins- Please be aware that those cast will also need to support the production whilst at the ruins. The Ruins production requires the backstage area to be set up and taken down for each performance by the cast and crew.

Marketing- During the rehearsal process we will be involved in a number of events to support the marketing of show- please be aware of this.
